Frozen Mice 5/9g [pack of 25]

  • Frozen mice in intermediate stage of development, weighing from 5 to 9 grams
  • Deep-frozen product, delivered in dry ice
  • Available in packs of 25

These frozen mice are in the intermediate stage of development and represent the third largest size of feeder mice in our pet food store. The rodents offered in this offer weigh from 5 to 9 grams with a body length of approximately 4-5 cm. At this stage of development, mice are largely covered with fur and gradually begin to transition to solid foods such as grain and pellets.

Frozen Mice as a Source of Calcium and Nutrients

Based on available research, we are confident that all rodents offered in our pet food store perfectly meet the nutritional needs of many species of reptiles, amphibians, and other predators kept at home. Frozen mice 5-9g also serve as a great source of protein, fats, and other essential vitamins and minerals crucial for optimal health and growth of the consuming animals:

"All analyzed rodents typically met the known nutritional requirements of carnivorous mammals, but differences between mice and rats were evident."1

"Calcium concentrations increased with age in both mice (1.2–2.3%) and rats (1.9–3.3%)."1

The same study suggests that the magnesium content in frozen mice is highest in the medium size range:

"Mg concentrations ranged from 0.09 to 0.13% (mice) and from 0.11 to 0.18% (rats), with the medium size class of both species having the highest values."1

Therefore, providing your animals with medium-sized frozen mice can help meet their basic nutritional needs and support healthy growth and development.

Feeding Recommendations

frozen mice for corn snakeFrozen mice 5-9g are an ideal food source for various carnivorous animals, including:

  • Small snakes,
  • Many species of monitor lizards and lizards,
  • Cats and dogs (as part of a whole prey diet),
  • Raptors,
  • Ferrets.

Before feeding frozen mice to your animal, the product must be thawed. This can be done by leaving them in the refrigerator or by submerging the frozen mice in warm water until completely thawed. Do not use hot water, cook the rodents, or heat them in a microwave. Proper thawing of mice helps preserve their nutritional value and prevents any harm to your pet associated with consuming frozen or accidentally cooked prey.

Thawed mice can be fed to your pet whole or cut into smaller pieces, depending on the size of the animal. Smaller animals may require the mice to be cut into pieces to facilitate consumption and digestion. This can be particularly useful for very young animals or those still developing their hunting and feeding skills.

Regardless of whether you feed frozen mice whole or in smaller pieces, it is important to monitor your animal's feeding behaviors and adjust the size and form of the prey to ensure a safe and healthy meal.

Appropriate Meal Size for Different Animals

whole prey for cat: miceLarger predators such as larger snakes, monitors, or raptors may require multiple frozen mice of this size to meet their caloric and nutritional needs. Providing a single 5-9g frozen mouse may not provide sufficient food for these larger predators. The same applies to cats and dogs fed a whole prey diet.

To adequately satisfy the appetite of larger predators, it is recommended to feed these animals two or more medium-sized mice per meal. This ensures that the animal consumes an adequate amount of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals to support its growth, activity, and overall health. The exact number of mice required to feed a particular dog or cat will depend on the specific species, age, and size of the animal.

Regarding snakes, some guidelines suggest that a good indicator is providing prey with a width similar to the widest part of the animal's body. For larger snakes or monitors, this may mean providing larger prey, such as frozen rats. Monitoring your pet's appetite and condition can also help determine the optimal number of mice to feed during each feeding. Adjusting portion sizes as the animal grows and its needs change is an important aspect of maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

Advantages of Frozen Mice

prey for raptors: frozen miceFrozen mice provide a complete and balanced whole prey diet that meets the basic nutritional needs of carnivorous animals such as snakes, lizards, and raptors. Unlike live prey, frozen mice have a consistent nutritional profile, ensuring that animals receive a complete and balanced meal every time, without the risk of nutritional deficiencies that may occur with an unbalanced diet.

Feeding frozen mice also eliminates the risks associated with live prey, such as the possibility of escape and injury (bites, scratches). This provides safer feeding for both the caregiver and the animal.
