Matomys (Natal Multimammate Mouse) 50–59g [10 pcs]
Frozen mastomys are a natural, nutritious feeder option for reptiles, birds of prey, and carnivorous mammals. We also recommend this species for cats and dogs fed on a whole prey diet. The feeder animals available in our store in the 50–59 g weight range are larger individuals, ideal for adult animals.
Mastomys – what kind of species is it?
Mastomys natalensis, also known as natal multimammate mouse or Multimammate, are most commonly referred to as mastomys when used as feeders. This rodent species originates from Sub-Saharan Africa. These animals are widely distributed in the wild and are a key element of the food chain for many predators.
Product weight and size
Mastomys natalensis individuals weighing 50–59 grams are roughly twice the size of adult feeder mice. This size makes the adult mastomys a perfect feeding choice for larger snakes, birds, or cats in breeding programs.
A feeder known for high effectiveness
Mastomys are often selected as an alternative to standard feeder species such as mice and rats. Their milder scent and body texture make Mastomys natalensis more readily accepted by picky reptiles. Mastomys are especially favored for snakes going through fasting periods.
Mastomys and similar products in whole prey diets
This product works perfectly as part of a whole prey diet, especially for cats and dogs. A whole mastomys provides a balanced amount of protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals found in muscles, organs, bones, and skin.
Recommended for various snake species
Mastomys are particularly recommended for snakes native to Africa, including:
- Ball Python (Python regius)
- Rock Python (Python sebae)
- African House Snake (Boaedon fuliginosus)
- Green Mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps)
In practice, they are also used as an alternative to mice and rats for many captive snakes. Even non-African species often prefer the taste and scent of natalensis and consume them more readily than, for example, mice.
Safe product with guaranteed quality
Our mastomys are sourced exclusively from trusted breeders. The animals are humanely euthanized using carbon dioxide (CO₂) in compliance with legal regulations, then deeply frozen and stored in controlled conditions.
Shipping with complete safety in mind
Not only the breeding but also the shipping method ensures the high quality of our feeders. We ship natalensis in thermal-insulated packaging with added dry ice, preserving the product’s top freshness and quality.
Nutritional analysis – what’s inside mastomys natalensis?
- Moisture: 60%
- Ash: 4%
- Protein: 21%
- Fat: 8%
The natalensis species offers ideal proportions for the healthy development of predators fed naturally.
Mastomys – a favorite food for snakes
Snakes often show greater interest in mastomys than in other feeder rodents. Mastomys have a stronger natural aroma, yet are less intensely scented than standard mice or rats – helpful when dealing with feeding difficulties.
Gentle on the digestive system
The optimal protein-to-fat ratio makes mastomys an easily digestible meal, even for growing snakes and sensitive mammals. However, please consider the size (10 to 12 cm) and adjust accordingly to the size of the animal being fed.
In 2025, we introduced three additional mastomys sizes to better suit younger animals. Mastomys of approx. 6 cm are great for the smallest animals. Those measuring 7 to 8 cm are ideal for juveniles. Similarly, sizes of 8 to 9 cm are perfect for subadults. All mastomys in our store, regardless of size or weight, are sold in packs of 10.
Mastomys as a whole prey option for cats
This product is particularly recommended for adult house cats fed on a whole prey diet. Mastomys offer all essential nutrients in their most natural form. The 10–12 cm size is especially appealing to adult cats.
Mastomys and the domestic cat’s ancestors
The species Mastomys natalensis originates from the same regions as the ancestors of modern domestic cats. In practice, cats often instinctively enjoy the taste and scent of feeders from this species. For cats reluctant to accept the three most popular whole prey types of 2025 (mice, rats, quail), mastomys can be a breakthrough.
Nutritional value in its natural form
The muscles, organs, bones, and fat in mastomys carcasses deliver nutrients that are often missing from processed pet foods. This feeding approach is the closest possible match to what a cat would eat in the wild. The 10–12 cm size also helps satisfy the cat’s natural hunting instincts.
How to serve frozen mastomys?
Thawing is best done in the fridge or at room temperature. Room temperature thawing should not exceed 3 hours. You may also use warm (not hot!) water to speed up the process to about 30 minutes. Do not use microwaves or ovens for thawing.
Storage conditions for frozen mastomys
Store the product in a freezer at –18°C or below. Once thawed, do not refreeze the feeder animal.
