Frozen mastomys weighing 10-20g are high-quality feeder rodents for snakes, birds of prey, and carnivorous mammals (e.g., cats on a whole prey diet). Mastomys, also known as Multimammate Mice, are small rodents native to Sub-Saharan Africa. Frozen mastomys are a staple food source for many predators in the wild, making them a highly valued component of the diet for both domestic animals and those housed in zoos and wildlife rehabilitation centers. The 10-20g size is particularly suitable as feeder prey for young or small animals.
Benefits of Mastomys as Feeder Rodents for Snakes
Mastomys are known as an effective solution for the problem of fasting in snakes. They have a slightly different, milder scent compared to feeder mice and feeder rats, often making them a successful way to encourage snakes to eat when other methods fail.
Breeders observe that young snakes not only eagerly consume mastomys but may also experience improved growth as a result. The optimal protein and fat content of mastomys ensures that they do not strain the digestive system of snakes.
Which Snakes Can Eat Mastomys?
Mastomys can be part of the diet of all snakes that naturally feed on rodents. They are especially recommended as prey for snake species native to Africa:
- Ball python (Python regius)
- Rock python (Python sebae)
- Angolan python (Python anchietae)
- Sand snake (Psammophis sp.)
- African house snake (Boaedon fuliginosus)
- Tanzanian house snake (Boaedon capensis)
- African burrowing snake (Atractaspis bibronii)
- Rough-scaled snake (Mehelya capensis)
- Green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps)
Mastomys as Feeder Rodents for Cats (Whole Prey Diet)
Mastomys originate from the same regions as the probable ancestors of domestic cats, which may explain why cats enjoy their taste so much. Mastomys are commonly fed to cats as part of a whole prey diet. These rodents provide cats with a complete set of nutrients in their natural form—the carcass includes muscles, organs, bones, and fat in ideal proportions.
Due to their small size (10-20g), mastomys should not be the primary food source for adult cats, but they can be a valuable part of their diet. Frozen mastomys are easy for cats to consume, well-liked, and gentle on their digestive system.
Safe and High-Quality Feeder Rodents for Snakes and Cats
The mastomys sold in our whole prey store come from specialized breeding facilities. Our feeder rodents are pathogen-free and are humanely euthanized using CO₂ in accordance with regulations. They are then deep-frozen, transported, and stored under controlled conditions. We ship frozen rodents to our customers via courier, packaged in insulated containers with dry ice.
How to Serve Frozen Mastomys?
Upon receiving the shipment, mastomys should be transferred to the freezer. Before serving, we recommend thawing the rodents in the refrigerator or at room temperature. They can also be thawed in warm (but not hot) water. We do not recommend boiling, baking, or microwaving feeder rodents.
