Frozen gerbils weighing between 40-60g are a high-quality food source for snakes, birds of prey, and other carnivorous animals. Gerbils, as whole prey, provide complete protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals, making them an excellent choice for cats and dogs as well.
Which animals can eat gerbils?
Gerbils are small rodents native to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. In the wild, gerbils are a common part of the diet for numerous species, including snakes (e.g., pythons, boas), carnivorous lizards (e.g., tegus, monitors), birds of prey (e.g., hawks, owls), and carnivorous mammals such as ferrets, cats, skunks, and meerkats.
How to choose the right size gerbil for your snake?
To select the appropriate size of gerbil for your snake, follow this rule: the size of the prey should match the widest part of the snake's body. If you are unsure which size to choose, it is better to opt for a smaller size rather than a larger one to avoid the risk of the snake regurgitating its meal. In nature, snakes are opportunistic predators that hunt the easiest available prey. Snakes are also known to raid nests of various species, so offering multiple smaller prey items can reflect the natural feeding habits of reptiles.
Gerbils as a solution for fasting snakes
The unique scent and taste of gerbils make them an excellent choice for animals that refuse (either consistently or periodically) to eat other rodents like mice or rats. Frozen gerbils are known as an effective method for breaking fasts in snakes, particularly in royal pythons and boas.
How to serve frozen gerbils?
Frozen gerbils, like all such products, are shipped via courier in thermal packaging, additionally secured with dry ice. Most of our shipments reach our customers within 24 hours of dispatch, but the products are packed to ensure they remain frozen even in case of delays.
Upon receiving the shipment, frozen gerbils should be immediately stored in a freezer. Before serving, we recommend thawing the gerbils at room temperature or placing them in a sealed bag and submerging them in warm water. It is important to ensure the product is completely thawed before feeding. Never heat gerbils in a microwave or oven.
