WHOLE PREY: Wet cat food, 1 × 400 g

Cats should eat mice, but they should not have to hunt them. Not every cat guardian is willing to accept the compromise that feeding a whole prey diet involves. At RAW PETFOOD, we decided to solve this problem by creating a complete wet cat food made of 100% WHOLE PREY.

NEW: Cat food with added mice

WHOLE PREY food is a product created with the natural diet of cats in mind. Cats, when given a choice, willingly return to a diet optimal for their species, hunting rodents and small birds. By eating their prey whole—without skipping internal organs or bones—they provide their bodies with all the nutrients necessary to maintain health and good condition.

Instead of recreating a feline diet using commonly available meats, we chose an innovative approach. We sealed in a convenient can what cats would truly eat in nature. Mice, rats, and day-old chicks replacing small birds were ground whole and preserved without the use of artificial additives. Carefully selected proportions of rodents and birds allowed us to obtain a complete food for adult cats with minimal supplementation.

Why WHOLE PREY?

WHOLE PREY is a food with a maximally simplified composition: 60% day-old chicks, 20% rats, and 20% mice. This composition reflects a cat’s natural diet: rodents and small birds. The product is a valuable diversification of the diet with new protein sources—mice and rats that are currently not present in commercially available cat foods.

WHOLE PREY wet food is nutritionally appropriate for the species. It contains no artificial additives. You will not find grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs, lactose, or soy, which may cause food intolerances in cats. Our whole prey–based food is also free from fillers, colorants, and flavor enhancers.

The high palatability and acceptance of the food among cats are due solely to its taste and form. The extremely rare flavors of mice and rats stimulate cats’ appetites. Cats also appreciate the appetizing, easy-to-eat consistency of a soft, moist pâté.

WHOLE PREY is a wet cat food produced entirely in Poland. For its production, we used day-old chicks from our own hatcheries and rodents of a quality valued by zoological gardens in numerous European cities. The carefully developed formula is based on FEDIAF nutritional recommendations and the strict requirements in force within the European Union.

The WHOLE PREY diet sealed in a convenient can

The whole prey diet is a feeding model aimed at reproducing a cat’s natural diet as accurately as possible. This model assumes abandoning products available on pet food store shelves. Instead, so-called feeder animals appear in the cat’s bowl. These include mice, rats, other rodents, and small birds (quail, day-old chicks). The cat eats the prey whole, just as in nature—not only the meat, but also the skin, bones, bodily fluids, and internal organs. Prey consumed in this way provides a complete set of nutrients ensuring the cat’s health and well-being. Fur, skin, cartilage, and bones constitute what is known in the whole prey diet as "animal fiber". It performs functions similar to plant fiber but is more appropriate for a carnivore’s diet.

For years, we have been supplying frozen products that are elements of the whole prey diet for our customers’ pets. We also carefully listen to their feedback and needs. We know that whole prey feeding is considered a model for guardians with strong nerves. Not everyone is comfortable with the sight of a cat eating thawed prey from a bowl. Shipments containing whole prey products can only be sent on specific dates and must be collected immediately to prevent thawing. For many, storing a set of prey animals in a home freezer is also a significant obstacle.

We want every cat to be able to eat what is best for them. That is why we set ourselves the goal of addressing the typical problems that prevent some of our customers from choosing a whole prey diet. Typical feline prey—rodents (mice and rats) and small birds (in this case, day-old chicks)—were carefully ground, mixed, and placed in a convenient 400 g can. We believe that WHOLE PREY wet cat food will make the natural feline feeding model even more accessible.

Feeding guidelines for WHOLE PREY wet food

WHOLE PREY is a complete wet food for adult cats. This means the food contains all essential vitamins and minerals and constitutes a complete and balanced meal for a cat. The product can be used as a staple food for adult cats. It can also be fed as a diversification of a diet based on other foods, BARF, or whole prey feeding.

We recommend feeding approximately 65–70 g of food per 1 kg of the cat’s body weight per day. However, this is an indicative amount and should be adjusted to the individual needs of the cat to maintain optimal body weight. The actual daily portion should take into account age, activity level, BCS (Body Condition Score), and other individual factors of the animal.

We recommend serving the wet food at room temperature, divided into several meals throughout the day.  After opening, the can should be stored in the refrigerator and used as soon as possible. Regardless of the type of food consumed, the cat should have constant access to fresh, clean drinking water.

Composition of WHOLE PREY cat food

Composition: Whole day-old chicks (60%), whole mice (20%), whole rats (20%), calcium carbonate, vitamin B₁.

Dietary additives (per kg): Vitamin B₁ 2 mg.

Thanks to a formula entirely based on the whole prey diet, our food contains meat, organs, and bones in proportions exactly as cats consume in the wild. When creating WHOLE PREY wet cat food, we did not attempt to improve nature. We opted for a maximally simplified production process. The whole prey raw material was processed only as much as necessary to safely can the food. This allowed us to avoid high losses of nutritional value. The high-quality protein in our food therefore comes from rodent and day-old chick meat, calcium from bones, and taurine from the brains of feline prey. The addition of calcium and vitamin B₁ merely supplements minor deficiencies resulting from the preservation process.

FAQ - Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What animals are used to produce WHOLE PREY pet food products?

Rodents (mice and rats) used in the production of WHOLE PREY food and treats come from specialized feeder-breeding facilities. These are exactly the same animals that we offer for sale in frozen form. They are healthy rodents, bred specifically as animal feed under controlled conditions and with attention to their welfare. The chicks are one-day-old male chicks from our hatcheries. In this case as well, we ensure that the entire process complies with applicable regulations and animal welfare standards.

How are the animals used in WHOLE PREY products euthanized?

The animals used in the production of WHOLE PREY products are euthanized in accordance with applicable law, using CO₂. The process is painless and does not cause additional stress. The animals simply fall asleep, which means they are euthanized in a manner that is far more humane than many other animals used in commercially available pet foods.

Has WHOLE PREY food been tested? What standards does it meet?

The complete WHOLE PREY food for adult cats has been laboratory tested at the accredited laboratory J.S. Hamilton Poland. The analyses were carried out using approved analytical methods, and the laboratory holds appropriate accreditations confirming the reliability of the results.

Based on the conducted analyses, it has been confirmed that the food meets the nutritional guidelines of FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) for adult cats. Thanks to the use of whole animals (whole prey) and an appropriately designed production process, the formula - without the need for extensive synthetic supplementation - meets FEDIAF nutritional standards at a daily intake corresponding to 100 kcal/kg⁰·⁶⁷ of the cat’s body weight.

The food also complies with all applicable legal requirements for pet food in Poland and throughout the European Union.

Why does the can hiss when opened?

Our cans are tightly filled with natural, complete food. Sometimes, when opened, you may hear a hissing sound - this is the effect of the vacuum created during sterilization, which ensures the product’s freshness and safety. This is normal and does not mean the food is spoiled.

Does the size of a cat affect the size of a whole prey meal?

Does the size of a cat affect the size of a whole prey meal?

Should the selection of whole prey components differ for a roughly 2 kg Singapura compared to a 10 kg Maine Coon? Although such extreme differences in body mass are not commonly observed among cats living in the wild, the analyses cited in the bibliography of this article may nevertheless bring us closer to answering the question posed in the title.

Whole Prey and Meal Size in the Natural Diet of the Cat

Whole Prey and Meal Size in the Natural Diet of the Cat

Cats have accompanied humans throughout every stage of exploration and colonization, often adapting to new environments so effectively that in many places they have become dominant predators. This widespread presence of cats across all continents has resulted in an extraordinarily broad and diverse range of feline prey. Equally varied are the sizes of meals cats consume - from insects weighing less than a gram to livestock weighing several hundred kilograms. With such diversity in the diet of this small predator, is it even possible to determine a standard meal size for a cat fed a whole prey diet? This is the question we aim to explore in the article below.

The Natural Composition of a Cat’s Diet – Whole Prey

What do cats eat in the wild? The answer to this question can be incredibly valuable for caretakers feeding their domestic cats a whole prey diet. It’s easy to list what constitutes a cat’s natural food: small mammals (primarily rodents), birds, and insects. However, things get more complicated when we try to determine the optimal proportions of each prey type in a cat’s diet.

Bird flu in cats and day-old chicks

Bird flu in cats and day-old chicks

Avian influenza is a viral infectious disease that primarily affects birds, but in some cases also spreads to other animal species. In 2023, the H5N1 virus became a widely discussed topic among cat owners. In 2024, concerns about the possibility of the disease occurring in our pets, especially those fed poultry in the form of barf or whole prey diet still persist. At Raw PetFood, questions are also directed about whether our day-old chickens are safe for cats and what procedures ensure that this is the case?
